Study Guide Generator

Create comprehensive, source-grounded study guides in minutes using NotebookLM's structured output capabilities.

The Setup

Load your unit materials — textbook chapters, lecture notes, supplementary readings — into a single notebook.

The Prompt Sequence

Step 1: Extract Key Concepts

List every key concept, term, and idea from these sources.
Organize by subtopic. Include page/source references.

Step 2: Generate Definitions

For each key term identified, create a definition that:
- Uses simple language
- Includes an example
- Notes common misconceptions

Step 3: Create Practice Questions

Generate 5 questions for each subtopic:
- 2 recall questions
- 2 application questions
- 1 analysis question
Include answers with source citations.

Step 4: Build Connections

Create a concept map showing how the main ideas
in these sources connect to each other.

Export and Format

Copy the outputs into a Google Doc or your LMS. The source citations help students trace answers back to readings.

Variations

Quick Review Version

Single prompt: "Create a one-page review sheet with the 10 most important concepts and 5 practice questions."

Student Self-Check Version

"Generate a checklist of 'I can...' statements for each learning objective covered in these sources."

Pro Tips

  • Run this before you finalize your assessment — gaps in the study guide often reveal gaps in your materials
  • Share the notebook with students so they can ask follow-up questions grounded in the same sources
